FASTAfrica Global Internet Campaign
In the week of 1-7th, May 2016, CongoInThePicture; a youth-led organization based in the democratic republic of Congo and whose mission is to fighting against poverty through the use of ICT, peace and democracy advancing, etc, the organization have been selected and granted in order to run the FAST Africa campaign in the Congo.
The FAST Africa campaign in the Congo had the mission of seeking long terms strategies that could leading to better internet connectivity and protection of local users. The event also was an opportunity for CongoInThePicture in partnerships with local media in funding of the Web Foundation to defend the internet freedom and plead for the signing of the African Declaration on Internet rights. But the internet access not only must be inclusive but also be fast, affordable, safe and transparent for the whole Congolese people without any discrimination.
Different activities related to the campaign have been run in eastern Congo region where participants from different social layers including politics, mobile companies and the civil society working locally contributed to the success of the project.
During this action week, FAST Africa campaign in the DR Congo revealed some unexpected facts till now unknown by citizens. Most of them didn’t know that the use of internet is a right like other human rights and must be defended at the same level like those.
FAST Africa was a media campaign where local actors discussed about long term strategies to be envisioned in order to ensuring fast and affordable internet connection for all in the DR Congo.
The message of FAST Africa campaign in Congo is addressed to Congolese government and mobile companies.
The events took place in Uvira and the timeframe was from 1-7 May, 2016.
- PROJECT GOALS
The goals of FAST Africa campaign in the democratic republic of Congo were set up as follow:
- Defending fast, affordable, safe and transparent internet connectivity for all in the Congo
- The establishment of long term strategies to be set up by both government and mobile companies for fast and affordable internet for the whole Congolese community.
- Inviting the government and the whole citizen to get involved in the signing of the African Declaration on Internet rights and freedoms,
- PROJECT RESULTS
The FAST Africa campaign was a 100 percent media project. During the action week, 2 radio talks were broadcasted in Uvira in eastern Congo region where politics, mobile companies discussed on envision able strategies to be set up so that the Congolese people get the fast and affordable internet connection. A radio spot also have been broadcasted on two local radio stations explaining people about the African Declaration on internet Rights and Freedoms.
